ICP/MS User Facility

ICP/MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry) is well suited for analysis of metals in samples with a wide range of matrices.  Environmental, medical, industrial, and specialty chemical research as well as many industrial production processes rely on the use of this highly sensitive and specific tool.

The Agilent 7500ce ICP-MS at Montana State University is capable of analyzing:

  • Trace* level concentrations of approximately 90% of the elements in the periodic table without interferences**
(* depending on the element down to the ppt level – details below)
(** see Octopole Reaction System (ORS) schematic below for explanation on efficient interference removal)
  • Isotopic ratios of elements
  • Speciation of oxidation states and/or metal organic complexes using Gas or Liquid Chromatography coupled with ICP/MS
  • GC- and HPLC-ICP/MS can be used to identify and quantify environmentally important species for elements such as arsenic, selenium, mercury, antimony, etc.

Approximate Range of Elements (marked in red) that can be analyzed using the 7500ce ICP/MS. Carbon, Phosphorous, and Sulfur can be analyzed with high sensitivity in specific matrices using GC-ICP/MS.

Charges are from $8 per sample depending on sample, number of elements to be analyzed, type of analysis, and association (TBI, MSU, academia other than MSU, and private sector). Click here for detailed fee structure.
