Biofilm Methods Workshop

February 1, 2006

Stains for this workshop were donated by Molecular Probes - Invitrogen.
A huge thanks to Molecular Probes - Invitrogen for giving us this opportunity to learn more about various stains and what they can do for our research imaging.

Diane Gray (right), our colleague at Molecular Probes, brought 11 fluorescent stains for us to use during this workshop. Many of these stains were either unfamiliar to us or had not been used extensively on biofilms. This made the workshop an experiment for everyone, including CBE staff.  Everyone felt free to contribute their ideas and expertise and for some it was a fun "return to the bench top". The resulting images (above) were fascinating and inspirational.

Diane Gray, Microbiologist

Simply through her enthusiasm for learning and teaching, CBE Betsey Pitts (far left) encourages an atmosphere of open discussion and sharing of experience among participants.

No more sitting on stools...it's time for the "hands on" stuff!. After shrugging on lab coats and finding some goggles and gloves, participants watch CBE Diane Walker (purple gloves) demonstrate biofilm growth reactor sampling.
Now it's your turn.  John Novak and Ali Kilic (American Air Liquide) teamed up to prepare their experiment.
Diane Gray, Molecular Probes, was right in there, too.  On her right is lab partner, Chia Hung, Sequoia Sciences, Inc.
Victoria Hitchens, FDA and Ron Najafi, NovaCal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. prepare serial dilutions of biofilm sampled earlier.
After lunch, the stained biofilms were observed in situ using epifluorescence microscopy.  CBE Willy Davison and Katy McClary, W.L. Gore & Associates discuss the results.
Richard Fiser, Tyco Healthcare  (left) and CBE Suriani (Sue) Abdul Rani scan through layers of stained biofilm using the confocal microscope.

THANK YOU TO.....

all the participants whose interest and participation
made this such a great workshop.
