Research Highlights
ASTM Method Approved
ASTM Committee E35 approved the method titled "Standard Test
Method for the Quantification of a Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Biofilm Grown with Shear and Continuous Flow using a Rotating Disk
Reactor." Interested parties may obtain the standardized
biofilm growth protocol from ASTM. The ASTM number is E2196-02 and
the expected publication date is May 2002. Any questions may be
directed to Darla Goeres at darla_g@erc.montana.edu.

Wiley Faculty Award for Meritorious Research
Dr. Anne Camper has been chosen to receive the Charles & Nora
L. Wiley Faculty Award for Meritorious Research. The Wiley Awards
are presented annually by the MSU Foundation to selected members of
the faculty in honor of meritorious achievements in research and
creativity. Anne will receive her award May 10, 2002, at the Honor
& Awards dinner hosted by President Gamble at Montana State
University.

Education
REU Program Acknowledgement
The CBE would like to thank the Industrial Associates for
submitting projects for this summer's Research Experience for
Undergraduates (REU) program. All eight of the REU positions have
been filled and we will let you know in the June issue who the
students are and what projects they will be working on.

Upcoming CBE Workshops and Meetings
Industrial Associate Conference and TAC Meeting
July 23-25, 2002
Montana State University
_______
Biofilm Image Analysis Workshop
July 25-26, 2002
Center for Biofilm Engineering
Montana State University
Bozeman, MT, U.S.A
Daily workshop activities will include lectures and laboratory sessions. The lectures will cover biofilm structure and image analysis of
biofilms. The lab sessions will cover how to acquire biofilm images and how to use the biofilm image analysis software developed by the Biofilm Structure and Function Research Group. Workshop details and registration forms can be found at:
http://www.erc.montana.edu/CBEssentials-SW/research/Structure_function/default.htm
_______
Microsensors: Manufacture and Applications Workshop
August 19-23, 2002
Center for Biofilm Engineering
Montana State University
Bozeman, MT, U.S.A
Microsensors (pH, dissolved oxygen, ion selective microelectrodes) are becoming indispensable tools for studying biofilms and small biological samples. The goal of this workshop is to provide the participants with the knowledge necessary to design, manufacture, and apply such
microsensors. Lab sessions and lectures will illustrate the electrochemical principles of the measurements, explain how microsensors are manufactured, and demonstrate how they are applied to study
biofilms.
The workshop is sponsored by the Biofilm Structure and Function Research Group at the Center for Biofilm Engineering, Montana State University. The activities include four days of lectures and lab sessions, and a one-day field trip to Yellowstone National Park.
For details on this workshop see the following web address.
