EQUATION NOTATION: POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE (V) (Compare with overpotential (E) in Electrochemistry)

Electric potential difference V=VB-VA between any two points A and B in any medium is defined in terms of the electric field vector, E in that medium:

V = VB - VA = SAB E . ds

 

where the integral is taken along an arbitrary path connecting the points A and B, ds is an infinitesimally small vector tangent to the path. The result is independent of the choice of the path.
