Two similar biofilm workshops took place in 2004: the first in January in Concepción, Chile, and the second in July in Bozeman, Montana, USA. Both workshops were funded through a grant from the NSF/DOE-sponsored Pan-American Advanced Studies Institutes (PASI) Program. The goal of these workshops was to broaden student researchers' knowledge-base through lectures and hands-on application of techniques critical to the study of biofilms. In addition, the focus of the workshops was on the interdisciplinary nature of biofilm studies—highlighting, in particular, the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, and engineering. The primary objective of the workshops was to familiarize students with techniques that allow microscale investigation of microbial biofilms; after the course, students had gained understanding sufficient for independent application.

The techniques presented included engineering aspects of reactor design, genomic and proteomic approaches to investigation of microbial communities, the use of microelectrodes, and advanced microscopy and use of imaging software.

Two other very important aspects of the workshops were to foster interactions among students from diverse educational as well as cultural backgrounds and to expose students to an industrial perspective on real-world problems related to biofilm processes and how academic/industrial collaborations may be established to address these issues.

These workshops were open to post-graduate and advanced graduate students (i.e., postdoctoral and PhD level students). A maximum of 20 students wase accepted for each workshop. Grant funding was provided to cover student airfares and living allowances. Student housing was provided in immediate proximity to the workshop locations.
