Several
PASI instructors (Dr. Mark Shirtliff, Linda Loetterle, and Dr. Michael
Givskov) find time to discuss matters of importance after the daily
routine of the workshop.

PASI
students were treated to a tour of the wonderful botanical gardens in the
small town of Lota, located a little south of Concepción.

The PASI
attendees visited this estuary and study site of Dr. Homero Urrutia's
research group near Concepción. This petroleum-impacted site is being
evaluated for the potential role microorganisms may play in degrading the
various contaminants shown to be present.

This is
just one of the wonderful views the PASI students observed on our trip to
the mouth of the Bio Bio River. On the left is the Pacific Ocean, and on
the right is the extensive coastal estuary formed by the backwaters of the
river.

During our
field trip to the town of Lota, PASI attendees listen as an ex-coal miner
describes the mining operation. The tour actually concludes at the end of
a horizontal mine shaft that extends several hundred feet under the ocean.

students relax in the shade of a seaside restaurant after a bus ride and
an afternoon spent on one of the many beaches along the Chilean coast.

Some of
the PASI students were able to get tickets to attend a soccer match
between Chile and Brazil. In Chile, soccer IS king!
