Several PASI instructors (Dr. Mark Shirtliff, Linda Loetterle, and Dr. Michael Givskov) find time to discuss matters of importance after the daily routine of the workshop. Enlarged view PASI students were treated to a tour of the wonderful botanical gardens in the small town of Lota, located a little south of Concepción. Enlarged view

The PASI attendees visited this estuary and study site of Dr. Homero Urrutia's research group near Concepción. This petroleum-impacted site is being evaluated for the potential role microorganisms may play in degrading the various contaminants shown to be present. Enlarged view This is just one of the wonderful views the PASI students observed on our trip to the mouth of the Bio Bio River. On the left is the Pacific Ocean, and on the right is the extensive coastal estuary formed by the backwaters of the river. Enlarged view

During our field trip to the town of Lota, PASI attendees listen as an ex-coal miner describes the mining operation. The tour actually concludes at the end of a horizontal mine shaft that extends several hundred feet under the ocean.

PASI students relax in the shade of a seaside restaurant after a bus ride and an afternoon spent on one of the many beaches along the Chilean coast. Enlarged view

Some of the PASI students were able to get tickets to attend a soccer match between Chile and Brazil. In Chile, soccer IS king! Enlarged view Some of the PASI students made friends with local residents during a "sand-lot" soccer scrimmage. Enlarged view
