CBE Research Integration


Tangibly connecting all projects together is the requirement for computational analysis, mathematical modeling, and scale-up of specific biofilm processes. In order for industry to begin to understand and ultimately control complex biological systems, a methodology is required for extrapolating phenomenological data obtained at the microscale to macroscale practice. Through its Computational Analysis and Scale-up (CAS) group, the Center has taken the lead among biofilm researchers in producing quantitative descriptions of various biofilm processes.

The CAS group is responsible for:

  • facilitating the integration and synthesis of biofilm research results,
  • constructing computer models for biofilm processes, and
  • providing computer and quantitative technical assistance to Center researchers.
  • Models provide the framework for integration and synthesis. Scientists and engineers from all Center research projects work in collaboration to create new, or to modify existing, conceptual models for biofilm processes. For each model, quantitative characteristics are associated with each model component, whenever quantification is possible. The conceptual model is converted into mathematical expressions, then into computer code. The resulting computer model is used for a variety of purposes, including: guidance for scale-up to real-world applications, education, understanding, discovery, and experimental design. The models are evaluated by comparing model predictions to real data.

     

    The CAS group includes computer scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and statisticians, who provide technical assistance to Center researchers. New quantitative methodology is created as required. The CAS group is responsible for maintaining the Center's computers and computer network.
