Title: Effect of co-substrate concentration on dual-species population
distribution, permeability reduction and trichloroethylene (TCE) biodegradation in
porous media
Period: August 1997 to September 2001
Goals: The goal of this research was to create a reactive/reduced permeability biobarrier capable of simultaneously degrading trichloroethylene (TCE) and reducing porous media permeability. This
involved:
1) Examining the feasibility of combining a TCE-degrading organism (Burkholderia cepacia
PR1 pTOM-31c) with a thick biofilm-forming organism (Klebsiella oxytoca) in planktonic, biofilm and porous media environments.
2) Determining the effects of growth rate and substrate concentration on dual-species population dynamics in planktonic, biofilm and porous media environments.
3) Determining the effects of substrate concentration on TCE biodegradation and permeability reduction in a porous media reactor inoculated with dual-species cultures.
