The biofilm (brown) is exposed to fluid containing the antimicrobial agent (yellow).  If the biofilm can neutralize the antimicrobial agent by some reaction, then the bulk fluid concentration of the agent may be reduced to ineffectual levels.  This resistance mechanism depends on the relative rates of delivery of agent into the system and reaction of the agent by the biofilm.
